New Zealand scholarships are available to citizens of eligible countries. If your country is not on the list, then the New Zealand government does not offer any academic scholarships to you.

Scholarships provide:

  • Full tuition, living allowance (NZ$491 per week),
  • Establishment allowance (NZ$3000),
  • Health insurance while in New Zealand,
  • Travel to and from your home country and New Zealand at the start and end of your scholarship,

  • Travel home during your fellowship (one or two trips home are allowed depending on the length of your (fellowship) and assistance with research and thesis costs for many graduate students.

Eligibility Criteria:

Age requirements

To apply for a full New Zealand scholarship, you must be 18 years of age or older when the scholarship starts. This means that if you are 17 years old at the time of application, you must be on your 18th birthday before you start the scholarship in the first semester. Exception for Samoa: Scholars from Samoa can be 17 years old when the scholarship starts.

There is no upper age limit for applicants. This means that if you are 18 or older, you can sign up. However, applicants under the age of 40 are preferred for New Zealand scholarships for university or tertiary students.

Academic requirements

As part of the New Zealand scholarship application process, you must select your preferred educational institution and preferred courses. Scholarship applicants do not need to apply for admission to their preferred educational institution and courses, but must check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are set by your chosen educational institution, so you must check the minimum entry requirements on their website before applying for a New Zealand scholarship.

Each university or educational institution sets the minimum level of English you need for your preferred courses, so check their website.

In general, to study for a postgraduate qualification you must have at least:

• overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band below 6.0
• TOEFL score of 90 in the Internet test with a writing score of 21
• a total PTE Academic score of 58 with no Communication Skills score below 50
• an overall Cambridge Academic English (Advanced) score of 176 with no bands below 169.

In general, to study for a university qualification you must have at least:

• an overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band below 5.5
• TOEFL score of 80 in the Internet test with a writing score of 21
• an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no non-communication skills score below 42
• total Cambridge Academic English (Advanced) score of 169 with no bands below 162.

Contribution to the development of your country

Scholars are expected to contribute to the social or economic development of their country for two years after completing their fellowship studies. The purpose of the New Zealand scholarship is to fund the training of citizens from developing countries so that they can positively influence the development of their country by sharing new skills and knowledge gained during their studies. Therefore, scholars are expected to return home for at least two years after the scholarship to contribute to the social and economic development of their own country.

Work experience requirements

Applicants who wish to study courses that align with their current work experience and applicants who will continue to work in their current field after completing the scholarship are considered for scholarship applications.
