UN Institute for Training and Research Immersion Program 2023 is open to international students. The scholarship enables internship-level program(s) in International Relations and Diplomacy taught at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. The scholarship deadline is open.

The United Nation Immersion Program is a fully funded program organized by UNITAR during the coming year in Geneva, Switzerland. Participants will have the opportunity to gain direct experience with the United Nations by participating in this program.

UNITAR will host most of the activities at the UN headquarters in Geneva, the historic Palais des Nations. They will consist of a fine balance between the following elements:

  • Professional lectures
  • Training workshops
  • Multilateral conferences
  • Private guided tours
  • Career development sessions

The purpose is to equip participants with knowledge and skills in diplomacy and enable them to work more effectively and efficiently in any international environment. It also seeks to offer access to UN institutions and staff to build networks and gain insights into future career moves.

UN Institute for Training and Research Immersion Program Benefits:

The UN Geneva Immersion Program serves to provide an overview of the United Nations. It will help participants build a solid foundational knowledge of topics and issues in international affairs, provide training in basic diplomatic skills and offer activities with the following Geneva-based agencies:

  • United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)
  • United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR)
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
  • International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
  • World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

 Criteria For Eligibility:

The Immersion Program is open to anyone with a deep interest in the United Nations. Participants can come from the public or private sector, NGOs, think tanks and academia. Likewise, university students and participants from completely different backgrounds can apply.

To ensure the highest standards of quality, a maximum of 30 participants per field visit and 50 participants per online training program will be allowed. Slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. At the end of the programs, participants will receive a certificate of completion of UNITAR.

Application Process ?

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, UNITAR will ensure that the program is fully compliant with current health safety standards, including social distancing, hygiene measures and contact tracing in case some participants are not yet fully vaccinated. The program program may be subject to change in accordance with the latest developments in this regard.

In the event that due to any travel restrictions related to COVID-19, Geneva Field Visit participants are unable to travel to Switzerland this spring/summer, it is possible for them to participate in the UN Young Leaders Online Training Program free of charge. . In addition, their time slot for the Geneva visit will be automatically transferred to the next edition from July 17-21, 2023, August 21-25, 2023, or any time thereafter, at no additional charge.
