The Master’s Program in Human Rights and the Arts welcomes students with some professional or academic background in human rights, the arts, or related fields. The aim of the program is to stimulate new ways of thinking; develop new strategies for research, practice and engagement; and to incubate new relationships between activists, scholars and artists.
It offers students the opportunity to explore the conceptual and practical complexities of the intersection between human rights and the arts.
In addition to flexible and rigorous courses at the graduate level, students are expected to successfully present a research-based scholarly work or art performance/installation as their capstone project.

Eligibility Criteria:

Successful applicants to the Master’s program in Human Rights & the Arts must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, demonstrated research ability, an outstanding record of academic or professional activity in human rights, the arts, or related fields, and a commitment to understanding, researching, and promoting the growing encounter between human rights and art. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to grant exceptions to these requirements on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that the MA in Human Rights and the Arts program only accepts students for the fall semester.

How To Apply ?

Bard College welcomes all students, regardless of citizenship or national origin, to apply to the program. This includes undocumented students and students who hold Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. The application process for DACA or undocumented students is no different from the application process for any student living in the United States.

Applicants must submit the following :

A statement of purpose (800-1200 words) describing your motivation for applying to this program, previous academic and/or professional training, and the goals you would like to achieve while enrolled in the program. Please also briefly reflect on how you view the program as helping shape your long-term educational and/or career path.
Resume / Curriculum Vitae describing your education, current and previous employment (if any), publications (if any), artistic and/or curatorial production (if any) and any other experience or skills relevant to graduate study at the intersection of human rights and art.
A sample of work that exemplifies your research, writing or artistic practice. If you choose a written sample, please note that it does not have to be in human rights or the arts, but should demonstrate the research, analysis and writing skills you will bring to graduate-level work. Writing samples can be between 3,500 and 6,000 words, but no longer, even if you need to cut them out. If you choose to showcase artistic/curated work, please share text, video, audio or image files (including PDF documents) or links; whatever best represents your recent artistic or curatorial work. Art/curation demos can be between 1200 and 5000 words (in the case of text), 5-20 pages (in the case of images), 5-10 URL links (in the case of digital documentation), or otherwise not exceeding 30 minutes (in the case of audio-video files). Please note that you are only required to submit one type of sample, either a writing sample or an art/curation sample. Please include a brief description (50-200 words) of any type of sample you choose to submit in the appropriate input field.
Two (2) letters of recommendation from academic and/or professional reference sources. At least one of the recommenders must be a person who has worked with you in an ability to speak to your academic/intellectual/research attributes. Recommenders will be asked to submit their confidential letters of recommendation directly to the application portal. Please note that you should contact your recommenders and obtain permission for this requirement before entering their contact details into the application portal, which will then generate an invitation for them. Our application system allows you to request letters of recommendation online before completing and submitting your own application section.
Transcripts of all postsecondary academic work. You can upload unofficial transcripts or scans of your official transcripts to complete your application submission. Official transcripts required prior to registration must be mailed or emailed directly from the issuing institutions.
Proof of English proficiency. Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to submit scores for one of the following English proficiency tests: Test of English as a Foreign Language or The International English Language Testing System or Duolingo English Test. If required, you can upload unofficial scores or scans of your official scores to complete your application submission. Official scores, required prior to enrollment, must be mailed or emailed directly from the testing institution.
Please note that it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required materials are received by the application deadline. After applying, applicants still have access to the Application Status Portal to check when materials, including letters of recommendation, have been received.
The MA in Human Rights & the Arts program does not currently charge an application fee or require submission of GRE/GMAT test scores. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to grant exceptions to the above requirements on a case-by-case basis.
